New Young People's Centre

GYPP

The objective of the Goostrey Young People's Project is to provide a building in the Goostrey area for use as a Young People's Centre. The village currently has eight thriving youth organisations with a current total membership of over 150 people in the range 5 to 18 years.

GYPP intends to raise sufficient funding, including grants, to ensure that the new building is free from capital debt on completion. It will also organise a management committee to run the Centre after completion of construction.

Goostrey

Goostrey is a small yet self-contained village, with population of 2.450 persons. It has a primary school, village hall, two churches, two public houses, shops and a post office.  The population includes some 200 children aged under 11 years as will as 65 from outside attending Goostrey Primary school, and there are about 175 young people aged 11 to 18 years.

Goostrey has had a Youth Centre for over 25 years and activities for young people for more than 30 years. The Youth Centre, located on land leased from the Parish Council, is situated within the village and comprises a former World War 1 wooden hut. There is a need for a local centre where young people can usefully gather because there is very limited public transport serving Goostrey. This will help to maintain and enhance the existing community spirit.

The unsuitability of the existing building results in the necessity of the boys' uniformed organisations, which are all very active, to meet in alternative accommodation, located outside the village. All the organisations store equipment in a variety of locations, often with the goodwill of local farmers and others who have large sheds or garages. This is unsatisfactory for coherency, convenience, access and security aspects; additionally this places increased burden on the leaders.

The Young People's Centre

The proposed Young People's Centre will be a brick building located on the site of the present building. Situated on land leased from Goostrey Parish Council, it will be designed and constructed with special emphasis on on low maintenance and life cycle costs. It is expected that construction will start immediately following the demolition of the present building.

The proposed building comprises main hall, activity areas, kitchen, coffee bar, male and female toilets. There will be storage for equipment belonging to individual organisations and adequate car parking space will be provided. All facilities will have access for the disabled.
